Alfred 'Al' Allen Vertz, Sr.

Alfred Allen Vertz, Sr. FRANKSVILLE - Alfred A. Vertz, Sr., 83, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at his residence. He was born on August 30, 1932 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Walter and Catherine (nee: LaVassor) Vertz, Sr. Alfred's family moved to Antigo when he was a boy. On October 3, 1959 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Pilling at Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member. Al was a mechanic and had been employed at J I Case Company for 30 years, retiring on February 14, 1988. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and rode in the last mule pack. Al loved the outdoors, camping, big bon fires, canoeing, gardening and working in his garage. He also was an avid Packer and Brewer fan, enjoyed country music festivals and had been active with the Boy Scouts. Most of all he loved spending time with his boys, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Al made bowling a special event by paying them $1.00 for every strike. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Bonnie; sons, Alfred (fiancé Shannon) Vertz, Jr, Kevin (Lisa Kozlik) Vertz, Daniel Vertz and Michael Vertz; grandchildren, Erin Mann, Nicholas Vertz, Lindsey (Travis) Moor, Stephanie Vertz, Christina (Christopher) Schommer and Thomas Vertz; 13 great grandchildren plus one due in October; step grandchildren, Jonathan (fiancé Melisa) Haygood, Jason Haygood USAF and Thomas Haygood. He is also survived by sisters, Joyce Sense, JoAnn (Dennis) Sutte, Sally Mueller, Edith Anderson and Sharon (George) Short ; brothers, Willard (Earlene) Vertz, Delbert (Illa) Vertz, Dale Demine and Ervin (Jeannie) Vertz; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leonard (Patricia) Pilling, other relatives and friends. Al was preceded in death by his parents, son, James (Jamie) Vertz mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eugene (Lorraine) Pilling, granddaughters, Lily Ann Vertz and sisters, Charlotte Vertz and Carol Hint; brothers, Walter Vertz, Jr. and Donald Vertz, and Goddaughter, Shari Ann Denke. Memorial services will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 2 p.m. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. A special thank you to the Wheaton Franciscan Home Health Hospice for the care they provided.
