George LeRoy Povkovich

George L. Povkovich RACINE-George LeRoy Povkovich, 82, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care- All Saints on Friday October 26, 2012. George was born in Racine on April 30, 1930, the son of the late Joseph and Marie (Schaefer) Povkovich. He was a graduate of Wm. Horlick High School “Class of 1947”. George served in the United States Army from 1947 until his honorable discharge in 1949. He was united in marriage to Shirley Grant on May 22, 1948 in Racine. George was employed with the Racine Police Department for 34 years retiring in 1985, obtaining the rank of Captain. He was Champion of Champions with the Racine Police Department Pistol Team in 1957. George was a very active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, was Mr. Fourth Fest the first year of the Fourth of July Celebration and continued his participation for 30 years. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, along with being a sports enthusiast, finding great enjoyment in golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing and a loyal NASCAR fan. George played baseball for WestPoint military academy, where he was a pitcher and an overall valued player. George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, son, David Povkovich of Racine, grandchildren, Brian (Allyson) Povkovich of Fort Worth, Texas, granddaughter, Katy (Erick) Peasley of Racine, seven great grandchildren, and one on the way. He is further survived by other family members and dear friends. Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4340 Six Mile Road, on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Larry Sheppard officiating. Visitation will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. and at church on Wednesday from 10 until service time at 11 a.m. George will be laid to rest at West Lawn Memorial Park at 2 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember George in a special way may direct memorials to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Mortgage Fund. The Povkovich family would like to extend very special thank you to Wheaton Franciscan, Chaplain Mark Grobner, Joyce Meyer, Vicky Kuiper and family, Gil and Jeanne Bauman, Kate Nugent, Greg Otto and family and Veronica Rodriguez for their care, compassion and friendship given to George.
