Herbert Morton Jones

Herbert Morton Jones RACINE – Herbert Morton ‘Herb’ Jones, 86, passed away on Sunday March 13, 2011 at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center in Racine, with his family by his side. Herb was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 31, 1924 to the late John Stanley Jones and Irene Shapland, both of Wales. He was united in marriage with Gertrude Olivia McKeon Jones from July 5, 1947 until her death on February 27, 2001. On October 19, 2002 Herb wed Jeanne Kern Davies, whose husband Robert died in 1999. Herb served in the United States Navy during World War II. Most of his sea time was spent on a minesweeper, in the Pacific. The war interrupted his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. He also took post-graduate courses in the Business School at Marquette University. Mr. Jones moved to Racine in October of 1953 after living and working in Columbus and Dayton, Ohio. He received his professional engineering license from the state of Ohio that same year. Herb was employed by S. C. Johnson and Son, Inc. in engineering and distribution management for 27 years, retiring in 1981. He served as a volunteer on the board of directors for the Racine chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Herb was interested in sports and classical music, and enjoyed playing the piano. Herb is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his five children, David S. of Dallas, TX, Carol A. (David) Murray of Los Altos, CA, Thomas H. of Miami, FL, Janet I. (Al) Reed of Franksville and Nancy M. Jones of Racine; four step children, Nancy (Gary) Strong, John Davies, Mary (Richard) Gotthardt, and Julie (Brett) Sheen. He is further survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer Little, Michael and Sarah Murray, Colin (Meghan), Brian, Scott, Megan and Jaclyn Jones; seven great grandchildren Connor, Madison, Callum, Cody and Olivia Jones and Olivia and Henry Fowler, six step grandchildren, Troy and Julie Strong, Molly and Beau Gotthardt, and Allie and Ryan Sheen and great granddaughter, Finley Strong. Herb was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude, son, H. Daniel, brother, John and a grandson, Jeremiah Jones. Funeral services for Herb will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday March 18, 2011 at Sturino Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mark Jones of St. Lucy’s Catholic Church and Rev. Michael Pfingsten of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Harvard, ILL. officiating. Herb will be laid to rest at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery will full military honors. Visitation will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill of Racine County, 2300 DeKoven Ave. 53403, St. Lucy’s Catholic Church 3101 Drexel Ave, Racine, WI 53403 or Health Care Network, 904 State Street, WI 53402 have been suggested.
