John Mozol

RACINE – John Mozol, 90, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born on March 11, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Michael and Serafina (nee: Szeman) Mozol. John’s family moved to Racine when he was three years old. He attended William Horlick High School. Enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1942 serving in the North Atlantic, South Atlantic and the Mediterranean. John served from 1942 until March of 1948, when he was honorably discharged with a rank of Quarter Master 1st Class. He was very proud to have taken the veteran’s Stars & Stripes Honor Flight to Washington DC in September of 2010. John was united in marriage to Betty Bartel-McGregor on December 28, 1969. He had been employed with the Racine Fire Department from September 1948, retiring in February 1987 as Fire Rescue Captain. Twenty-five of those years were with the Rescue Unit. John taught as a volunteer First Aid and CPR for the Red Cross for 35 years. He also was active with the Boy Scouts for 35 years. John was also was a salesman for NAPA for more than 25 years. He was a member of the National VFW, Racine Retired Firefighters Assoc., USS Providence Assoc. and Retirees WINSA, an organization which was working on a project to get a Naval Vessel for the Sheboygan Museum. Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Betty; son Robert Mozol; daughters, Kathy Marie (David) Valetti and Ann Marie (Brian) Reynolds all of Racine; stepson, Robert (Kathy) McGregor of Muskego; grandsons, Larri Derrah IV and Sam Reynolds; step grandchildren, Adam (Jessica) McGregor and Scott (Amanda Christine Perlaky) McGregor and Peter Reynolds, sister, Sophie McDonough. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Mozol and sister, Olga (Howard) Possing and brother-in-law, James McDonough. Funeral services will be held at Sturino Funeral home on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. with full military honors. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until time of service. Private interment will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Stars and Stripes Honor Flight or one’s favorite charity have been suggested. Special thank you to Dr. Tierney, Dr. DeCheck and Hospice Alliance
