Ruth K. Fergus

Ruth K. Fergus RACINE-Ruth K. (nee: Petoskey) Fergus, 92, went to the Lord peacefully on March 17, 2013 surrounded by her family in the home that she and her husband built in 1949. Ruth was born in Zion, Illinois on May 24, 1920 the daughter of the late Thomas and Emma (nee: Jericho) Petoskey. She was united in marriage to James Harcus Fergus at Holy Communion Lutheran Church on June 10, 1944. During her life Ruth was president of Kiltie Drum and Bugle Corps, President of the YMCA Boys Choir, was an avid Bridge player, member of the Racine Women’s Club, an active member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church volunteer for the food pantry, Meals on Wheels, Racine Zoo gift volunteer, Y Diners and belonged to several book clubs. Ruth worked in many areas starting as a beautician, real estate agent, camera video operator at Telecable, beloved front desk receptionist at the YWCA from which she retired to be an accomplished Bridge player. She loved to read, volunteer, knit, golf, bowl dance, play Bridge, travel, spend time with her friends and entertain in her home. Ruth loved her family more than anything, especially her grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her children, James (Susan) Fergus, John Fergus, Jean (James) Veltman, Joan (Randy Bennett) Fergus, and four grandchildren, Matthew Veltman, Megan Veltman, Evan Bennett and Reyna Bennett. She was preceded in death by her husband, James on September 9, 1989, and one sister, Mary Petoskey. Ruth’s Memorial service will be held at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 2000 W. 6th Street on Sunday March 24, 2013 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Walter Hermanns and Rev. Mark Doidge officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday at church from 2 p.m. until service time at 4 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Graceland Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Ruth in a special way may direct memorials to Holy Communion Lutheran Church or River Bend Nature Center. Ruth’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to all the kind caregivers throughout her journey. She loved all her friends and family and was grateful for each of them.
