Thelma E. Schatzman

Thelma E. Schatzman RACINE-Thelma E. (nee: Gilbertson) Schatzman, 96, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care –All Saints on Sunday January 15, 2012. Thelma was born in Black River Falls, Wisconsin on October 3, 1915 the daughter of the late Gustave and Mazie (nee: Nutter) Gilbertson. Prior to her marriage she attended Washington Park High School. Thelma was united in marriage to Delbert A. Schatzman on November 3, 1934 in Racine. After raising her eight children she was employed as a Racine County Jail Matron for Racine County retiring at the age of 62. Thelma delivered meals on wheels for several years. She enjoyed knitting, golf, and playing cards at the Salvation Army Center. Most of all she found great enjoyment, dancing with her husband at Tom and Herbs. Her fondest memory was winning the Girls Basketball Tournament at the Salvation in her teen years. Thelma is survived by her eight children, James (Carolyn) of Trinidad, Colorado, Donald (Nancy), Delbert, Lois (Jerry) Herman, Gene (Suzanne) all of Racine, Johann “John” (Darlene) Schatzmann of East Troy, Bruce (Trudy) of Racine, and Roger (Jeanette) Schatzman of Waupaca. She is further survived by 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren. Thelma is further survived by one sister, Janis Boggs and one brother, Gilbert “Gib” Gilbertson, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert on April 29, 1974, one brother, Delbert Wheaton and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn (William) Sliker, Helen (Harold) Hendricksen, Barbara (Ben) Vittaco, sister-in-law, Stella Gilbertson, brother-in-law, Willis Boggs, daughter-in-law, Kathryn “Kitty” Schatzman, and one granddaughter, Vicky Schatzman. Also brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerome (Tyla) Schatzman, Della (Richard) Beth, Lorraine (Ray) Crozier, Jake (Phyllis) Schatzman and Earl Schatzman. Funeral services will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Terry McGugan officiating Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until service time. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Graceland Cemetery following services. According to Thelma’s wishes, the family requests no flowers. Those wishing to remember Thelma in a special way may direct memorials to her favorite causes, Salvation Army or Meals on Wheels. Thelma’s family would like to extend a very special to thank you to Wheaton Franciscan nursing staff and Wheaton Franciscan Hospice for their fine care and compassion.
